Q&A with Brett Mulzer, Owner of Moore Music
Evansville, IN
How many years have you been in business? How did you get started?
Moore Music opened in 1976 and was always the leader in the region in musical instruments and PA equipment. The store thrived under Pat Moore’s ownership all the way through 2012 when I purchased the store.
I actually bought the building the store was in so that I could build my studio that I moved from a smaller city nearby. 6 months after I moved in, Pat decided that he was ready to retire and offered the store to me, I immediately jumped at the opportunity!
Outside of just selling guitars, what else should people know about you? Do you offer lessons, repairs, etc..?
Other than selling guitars, we have a professional commercial recording studio, 77 Recording; a 125 seat live venue; a full in-house lesson program with our partners, Evansville Music Academy; and we do light repairs in house as well. We have two phenomenal luthiers that do our major repairs on guitars when we have the need. Also, we have an amazing amp builder (basically next door) that does our amp and pedal repairs.
What’s your favorite piece of PRS gear at your store?
Right now, I would have to say my favorite is a Private Stock Brent Mason that blows my mind. We also have a Blood Orange Hollowbody that jumps off our PRS-wall every time I look over there. It may end up in my basement soon!
If you could make a PRS Private Stock Built-to-Order guitar - what would the specs be?
A Custom 24 McCarty thickness in McCarty Burst or Tiger Eye Smokeburst. McCarty switching, a sick chevron flame top, flame maple neck, side body purfling, and some wicked inlay that an artist friend of mine would design. I also can’t take my eyes off the newest S2 Vela that just hit the store.
Most heard song when a customer is demoing a guitar?
Fade to Black - Metallica, random Iron Maiden songs, etc…
Favorite customer interaction?
My favorite customer interaction would have to be starting kids out with their first guitar. I bought my first guitar in 1988 from Moore Music and I will never forget that feeling. It changed my life. Now when I see one of my guys at the shop with a kid and his/her dad in the store, I get jitters. I get to relive that moment almost everyday now! A close second is when I get to talk to a customer that absolutely loves his new guitar and thanks us for taking the time with them to get the perfect piece. Ed, our Brick & Mortar Guitar Manager is the best in the business and Dennis can represent and explain a guitar over the phone better than anyone I have ever met. I get to see these guys make people happy every day. Returns are almost non-existent at our store.
Why buy a PRS from Moore Music?
We strive to make everything perfect for the customer. I only hire musicians that are passionate about their music, gear, and helping others. I don’t hire people who just want to make money, my guys care about each and every customer and usually build relationships with almost every person that walks through the door or buys online. We believe in our products and ourselves so much that we back it up with our no-risk return policy so you can try a guitar out, at home, without worrying about losing shipping costs if it doesn’t fit you perfectly.
Anything else folks should know?
Even though we have only been selling online for a short time, we have been providing the best guitars and the best service for over 38 years now. We aren’t a newcomer to treating people the right way, we have been building a reputation of impeccable service for almost 4 decades. Some of the guys that work at the store have been here for over 15 years, and Pat Moore, the original owner, still gives lessons at the store every week, so the old-school way of doing things is still evident in everything we do. We pride ourselves on old school service in an ever-changing world of guitar sales, whether it be in the store, on the phone, or online.
