Q&A with Jack Gretz, Owner of Northeast Music Center

How many years have you been in business? How did you get started?

24 years in the music retail business, and 6 years as the owner of Northeast Music Center! At a young age, I was visiting my local music store and became captured by the beauty of electric and acoustic guitars; the different colors, the shapes, the inlay work, I was instantly hooked!

Outside of just selling guitars, what else should people know about you? What other services does your shop offer?

I have built guitars for over 20 years from the ground up.

We love doing repair work in our store, we get guitars in from all over the US and every once in a while we get one from overseas.

We also just opened a lesson center and offer guitar lessons for acoustic and electric guitar, bass, vocals, drums, and brass. I don’t know of anyone that listens to music in their car, their home or, mobile device that does not sing along, tap their foot to the beat, or hum the guitar riff as they listen; we try to make that real for people with our lessons.

What’s your favorite piece of PRS gear at your store?

Right now I am torn between 2 instruments that we currently have in stock:

..and this exceptional PRS Tree of Life Acoustic guitar.

If you could make a PRS Private Stock Built-to-Order guitar - what would the specs be?

Haha! I have my dream PRS; it is based on a McCarty/Custom 22 Model with the semi-hollow option, tremolo, a thicker curly mahogany back, curly mahogany neck, the tree of life inlay, and quilted maple top in Smokey Blonde finish.

Most heard song when a customer is demoing a guitar?

We tend to hear a lot of blues licks - a lot of Stevie Ray Vaughan or David Grissom.

What has been your favorite customer interaction?

Several years ago, I had a young fellow come in asking about PRS Guitars. We let him try several different guitars out and he kept coming back to a Custom 24. After a few months, he came back in with his Mom and Dad and a box in his hand and asked if we had any more Customs in stock, to which we said yes.

The box contained all of the money he had earned and saved over the summer and fall time from cutting grass and weeding yards for the neighbors in his home town. He saved enough money and worked hard enough to buy a Custom 24 in Charcoal.

Anything else folks should know?

We stock over 100 PRS Guitars at a given time. We were selling and supporting the Private Stock program from day one. When the Private Stock program was brought into the world, I was there!

I have been selling PRS guitars for 20 years and truly believe that these are the best electric guitars being built in the world today. The consistency from guitar to guitar is impeccable.
